You do not normally need planning permission to change your windows or doors. There are of course exceptions, we have tried to list in detail the most common below, as well as other instances where you may not need planning permission but may need to be checked by building control.

Do you need planning permission to change the colour and style of your windows?

You don’t need planning permission to change the colour and/or style of your window, providing the property isn’t listed or in a conservation area.

Before we go into instances where new windows and doors may need planning permission, it is worth noting that since 2002 all new windows are required to pass building regulations specifications in order to reduce energy loss. To avoid extra unforeseen costs associated with building regulations we always advise that homeowners choose a FENSA registered window installer to ensure the quality of the work and product matches the correct criteria, saving the homeowner unforeseen costs and issues.

  • Any windows installed on the side elevation (upper floor) of your property must be fitted with obscure glass and be either non-opening (fixed lights) or more than 1700mm from the floor.

  • If your home is in a conservation area, there are likely to be restrictions in place however we are proud installers of the Residence collection a uPVC system specifically designed to replicate traditional designs for use in conservation areas, helping to maintain a properties period charm whilst also adding all the benefits of uPVC.

  • Creating new openings: we often have customers asking us if its possible to create new openings for windows or doors, or alternatively enlarge existing openings to let more natural light into a property. This sort of work requires the installation of a lintel in order to support the structure around the opening, any work of this nature would require an inspection from the local building control office, however this is something we can arrange for you, giving you one less thing to worry about.

In answer to the original question, if you’re thinking about, upgrading your windows or fitting new ones, you’re unlikely to need planning permission.
