Roller Shutter or Up and Over Garage Door?
An incredible 71% of homeowners looking to move improved the value of their home by replacing their garage door! Whether you’re looking to sell up or stay put we know how important a replacement garage door can be to both the overall appearance and functionality of your home as well as the value. Over the course of this blog post we are going to be looking at the two of the most popular types of garage doors, roller shutter and up and over focussing on the different advantages and disadvantages associated with both.
Up and Over Garage Doors
The most popular style of garage door we supply, and fit is still the up and over, as the name suggests an up and over garage door opens in an up and over movement. Available in a range of colours, designs and materials the up and over garage door is a versatile option for many homeowners.
With an extensive list of advantages including: affordability (up and over garage doors tend to be cheaper compared to other garage door options), up and over garage doors can also be automated and remote controlled, there isa wide choice of standard colours and a wider choice of custom RAL colour options, a choice of materials is available – including ABS? which is designed to bounce back into shape if dented, they work on a simple opening system, as with all of our products they are safe and secure, and are available in a range of designs.
However, like anything they aren’t without their drawbacks, for example if they are not automated they can be heavy to operate, they open outwards meaning you can’t park your car too close prior to opening, a significant disadvantage if you have a shorter driveway, they’re also less well insulated than other alternatives and aren’t recommended for use when the garage is a habitable room.
Roller Shutter Garage Doors
Roller shutter garage doors open vertically and roll around themselves into a box concealed at their head, they have many advantages over traditional up and over garage doors including: A better level of insulation with each slat measuring 10mm thick with a thermally efficient foam insulation, a rubber seal is fitted against the ground to provide a better weather seal, they are fully automated with remote controls and safety edge system preventing the door closing when it detects an obstacle in its path. Like the up and over garage doors the roller shutter garage doors are available in a range of colours, both a standard range and a range of custom RAL colours.
However, roller shutter garage doors are not without their drawbacks for example they require a certain level of headroom to fit the box concealing the door once its open and they are also only available in one design (horizontal slats)
In most cases we would always recommend a roller shutter door as its benefits generally out weigh up and over options. However ultimately its very dependent on the homeowner’s own personal taste and preference and both options have different advantages to the homeowner.
For example, in some cases the design of a roller shutter garage door may not be as complimenting to the architecture of certain homes, particularly with older properties.
